Waterbuck

Last Update 2014

The Waterbuck can be found East and West of the Rift Valley, the Luangwa and Middle Zambesi valleys in Zambia and Zimbabwe. As the name would imply, “waterbuck” tend to be found around water the majority of the time because we can not stand dehydration for a long period of time. They can have a gray-brown or reddish coat with darker legs. They have white around their nose, mouth and above their eyes as well as on their throats. Ellipsen water buck have a white ring that circles their rump while the Defassa waterbuck has a solid white patch on their rump. They graze on grasses, reeds, rushes, fruits and drink a very large amount of water. Waterbuck are usually not bothered by predators as they have scent glands on their skin that emit a foul odor and their meat is tough, stringy and smelly.
