
Lechwe

Lechwe are inhabit the floodplains that border the swamps in Southern Savannah in Zambia. The Kafue Lechwe (image A) have a bright chestnut colored coat with white underparts, facial markings, and throat with dark leg and body markings. As males age they become darker in color. The black lechwe (image B) of Lake Bangweulu is the darkest, red lechwe (image C) the lightest, and Kafue being intermediate between the two.

A relative is the Nile Lechwe (image D) which lives on boths sides of the White Nile in the Sudd (which are papyrus swamps). Nile Lechwe have a dark chocolate brown coat with a white saddle on their neck and shoulders as well as white neck, leg, and facial markings. All their coats are greasy and have a very distinct smell.
