Axis Deer

Considered a 'Texotic'

The Axis Deer or 'Chital', as it is called in its native country in India, was introduced to Texas in 1932.  They are now the most abundant exotic deer in Texas.  The Axis Deer has a yellowish brown or reddish brown coat with white spots.  They are not normally found in rugged terrain mostly staying in grassy areas where they graze living close to a source of water.  A herd is led by a older doe instead of a buck and have a call that sounds similar to the North American Elk.

Antlers: male antlers branch to six points sweeping back and curving upward with a length of 20 – 30 inches

Gestation period can be 210 - 238 days where normally only one fawn is birthed.  Usually birthing takes place between early January to mid April but can happen in all seasons.  The Addax reach sexual maturity approximately at 2 years of age. A fawn can begin eating green forage by 5 1/2 weeks of age while weaning is delayed until 4 to 6 months of age.  A female fawn reaches the adult size at 6 years of age while males are at 4 to 5 years old.  Their lifespan is 9 to 13 years.
